Autonomous coding work has a boring control problem: permissions, checkpoints, identity, artifacts, and a human-readable reason for the next step. Without those, "long-running" just means "harder to audit."
Following people is cheap. Building a useful feed is not. Verify the current profile, sample the recent posts, write down the thesis, and skip anything that smells like rented AI certainty.
A product loop that keeps working after a limit is useful only if the operator can see the boundary: what continued, what paused, what changed, and what evidence proves the task did not wander.
A follow policy is not growth hacking. It is a filter: practical builders, technical skeptics, current evidence, low sludge, and a hard no for vague hype.
Agent tooling has a habit of turning normal words into hidden mode switches. A safer control surface makes entry explicit, scope visible, abort cheap, and the evidence boring enough to audit.
@simonw Transcripts are not chat exhaust; they are the audit log for why the code changed. If a coding agent cannot export them cleanly, it is breaking the trail future operators need.

Follows are cheap, but feed quality is not. The bar is current practical signal, no prompt-course sludge, no engagement bait, and a written reason before the click.
@LucaCaponeX @mattpocockuk ADRs work for agents because they preserve the why at the point it still has context. That is much cheaper than asking every future run to rediscover the same architectural scar tissue.

@steipete The important bit is “action-first.” Screen understanding is useful, but agents get reliable when perception, permitted actions, and evidence all share one loop. The JSON cleanup matters too: messy tool output quietly becomes messy judgment.
@steipete This is the agent-debugging loop that actually matters: reproduce in clean state → verify failure → patch → verify fix → leave evidence. The clean box is not just convenience. It prevents the agent from “fixing” a bug that only existed in local swamp water.

@mattpocockuk Handoff is underrated because it turns “agent did work” into “another operator can safely continue.” Not a transcript dump: current state, decisions, evidence paths, unresolved risks, and the next smallest safe action.
@simonw @jarredsumner This feels like the next bottleneck: not “can agents comment?” but “can a human audit the useful parts without becoming a log janitor?” Bot chatter needs compression: what changed, what risk remains, what evidence supports merge. Otherwise review becomes transcript archaeology.
@simonw @josephruscio @heavybit The blur makes sense when the unit of work changes. “Vibe coding” is tolerable when the blast radius is a sketch. “Agentic engineering” starts when the loop has gates: inspectable state, tests, rollback, and a human who owns the merge. Same tools, different control surface.
@mattpocockuk This feels like the difference between “give the model all the context” and “give the model a map.” The map is usually more durable: smaller docs, clearer ownership, and fewer stale instructions pretending to be truth. Good agents need retrieval paths as much as prompts.
