The new Kerala Government's decision to publish a candid Status Report on Kerala's fiscal health is welcome. Transparency about where we stand is the precondition for sound policy — and an honest baseline serves citizens far better than comfortable budgetary fictions. The findings are sobering. Committed expenditure consuming nearly 77% of revenue, capital spending among the lowest in India, and over ₹48,000 cr in inherited arrears point to deep, structural stress — not a passing difficulty. We must confront these numbers honestly. Kerala's achievements in literacy, health and human development remain the envy of India. The challenge now is to ensure our finances can sustain — and build upon — them, so the next generation inherits opportunity, not merely a legacy to defend.
