@CallistaKirin In that same vein, couldn’t we call all art a waste of resources? What does it matter who made it or how? The real question is whether the feeling it evokes is worth what was consumed to create it. That applies to every medium, not just AI.

@CallistaKirin Good question. By the same token, why measure art’s value by the effort spent making it? If we’re honest, art has little objective, measurable value. Humans make and consume it because it pleases, moves, or affects us. Effort can be admirable, but it isn’t what makes a thing art.

@CallistaKirin Absolutely. How do you suppose graphite is mined? How long does it take an artist to make a piece with that graphite? How much filthy tap water did they make by taking showers and washing their hands between sessions? How much electricity to simply live?

@CallistaKirin Most of my play with AI to this point has not used data centers. I often use a drawing pad and am pretty decent with krita. I can't really speak to how good or bad data centers are, but I do believe there's a bit too much hype and disinformation going around on both ends.

@CallistaKirin I think them no better or worse than the pavement already covering the neighborhood streets, the trad artists that draw graphite from the ground, and the digital artists that consume as much water and electricity with their efforts.

@CallistaKirin Again, artists don't own the keys to the palace of "what is art?" Whether I create it, observe it, or something in-between is really quite irrelevant. It simply takes being open enough to experience it without first nitpicking methodology.

@CallistaKirin Oh, unwarranted ad hominem. You wound me. My point was that anthro artists do not define the furry fandom or get exclusive authority over what counts as art. Their anger, and yours, is misplaced. The soul of art is not decided by a narrow circle of skilled anthro artists.

@CallistaKirin Not to put too fine a point on it, but the furry fandom does not equal the opinions of artists skilled in drawing anthro figures. Those artists simply became fat on the spoils of a cornered market. Furry slop of any kind has *never* been art.

@CallistaKirin It doesn't *feel* similar, it is. The trads with charcoal pencils said the same to the cheating losers with drawing pads, infinite erasers and switchable layering. The trads complaining now are the trads of the past lamenting another leap in productivity and lost revenue.
