The Sikh kirpan originates in a religious edict from Guru Singh in 1699. In 1689, ten years earlier, the Bill of Rights granted all Protestants in the UK the right to bear arms. It’s a traditional right for everyone in the UK. The British government should give it back.

All the dystopian fiction I read as a young adult was always about a large, poor underclass exploited by a small elite. The social priming to expect this, and to oppose it, was massive. Today’s reality is that there’s a large, highly subsidized voting class of net consumers, and a small class of highly productive people, mostly struggling to build wealth, and so stressed that they barely reproduce. Because “highly productive” confers its own social elite status, and being “on benefits” confers the opposite, the financial or contributory reality is obscured. The predominant media messaging is about the guilt and obligation of the productive, and the worthy need of the subsidized. As usual, Europe is a couple years ahead of the US down this road. Memes about “Nick, 30 ans” and the increasingly byzantine social-financial contract are well known. The incentives are becoming so twisted that it makes less and less sense for a young person to be productive and more sense for them to be subsidized. The conventional social contract is tearing rapidly, which spells big problems. Here in the States, there remains some time to course-correct. Reflecting on this: what’s most interesting to me is that while much of the future-looking media I consumed ten to twenty years ago had some ideas that proved relevant to today, the reality has often played out in ways that are ironically the opposite. Many such cases, all of them humbling.

One law for all? One can almost imagine an alternative timeline in which this became a cornerstone of English law, and we exported it to the Anglosphere and other civilised countries, and it ended up a key facet of the modern world. Spooky thought. Doesn't bear thinking about.

I'd be surprised if Reform do this. To go after the Sikhs would be self-defeating - and this 'one law for all' argument cuts against religious liberty. Also, the kirpan was not used in the attack. Lowe has made the running on this, but it's one area Reform should not follow.
