Whatever level your faith is at, Christ can compensate to make it enough. Christ simply wants us to let Him make our seed-like faith into a beautiful tree.
This is a powerful principle for anyone who has doubts, goes through a faith crisis, or simply feels that their faith is insignificant. With Christ’s help, our faith is sufficient. It is not sufficient because it is perfect, but because Christ can make it so, as we do our part.
The scriptures teach that the gift of faith is a gift from God (see Moroni 10:11). A gift entails something that is not solely earned. While we should do our part to gain and strengthen our testimony, in the end, faith is a gift offered to us by the grace of Christ.
Christ’s blessings and miracles are not predicated on us having complete, grown-tree-like faith. Just like the father who came to the Savior, we need to ask for Christ’s compensating power.
Realizing how much God cares increases our urgency to improve and grow. We become more motivated to put forth our best effort. Understanding that Christ has merciful expectations gives us hope that we can succeed.
The only person who has ever kept the commandments perfectly was Christ, but part of the gospel—the good news—is that we get credit for trying! The compensatory power from our Savior allows us to receive blessings as we seek to do God’s will.
Jeffrey R. Holland: “With the gift of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the strength of heaven to help us, we can improve, and the great thing about the gospel is we get credit for trying, even if we don’t always succeed.”
Learning to keep the commandments is just as much a part of life’s journey as learning to have faith or learning to be patient. It is a process. However we often talk about obedience as a dichotomous outcome, as if someone is either obedient or not.
As we strive to come unto Christ, His grace is sufficient to compensate for all our failings. Christ’s power compensates for what we lack today so that we can keep moving forward and become what He wants us to be tomorrow.
We often spend too much time being frustrated that we are not as good of a Christian as we should be. However God is not angry if we are not the perfect disciple now because He sees us not only as we are in the present but as we will become.
Our worthiness to take the sacrament, specifically, and our ability to progress in the gospel, generally, is a result of our desire to overcome our weaknesses and follow the Savior.
Dieter F. Uchtdorf: “[Do] not be discouraged. Do not give up. The future is bright! Someday you will look back on the person you are today with kindness and compassion. And you will know then that the steps you took today molded you into the wonderful person you have yet to become
Christ not only acknowledges that we have weaknesses, but also states that He does not condemn us for them. When Christ speaks of weakness, He speaks with understanding, compassion, and mercy.
Russel M. Nelson stated, “[Christ] took upon Himself . . . your weakness. . . . He paid the compensatory price and provided the power for you to move every mountain you will ever face.”
We all have the ability to rise above our circumstances. However, I have come to realize that God sees people’s sins from a much more merciful standpoint than sometimes we suspect, often because some of the conditions that contributed to the sin were not solely the person’s fault
Our moments of weakness became stepping stones to creating Christlike strengths. Our Father can still give us an inheritance—despite our weaknesses—because of Christ’s Atonement. The mistakes we commit due to our weaknesses become learning experiences.
The Savior’s mission is not done; Christ is aiding us in the here and now. Christ’s Atonement is compensating us in our daily life through a complicated and chaotic journey. His Atonement is meant to guide humanity through a messy world.
Most of our questions about the imperfections of life revolve around the perceived gap between the beauty of the gospel teachings and the harsh realities of life. Our Savior makes possible a daily compensating power that fills these gaps by righting the wrongs of an unfair world.
