With the Makate matter finally settled out of court, it seems like a good time to talk about the dishonestly of the former CEO of the red network, Alan Knott-Craig in relation to Please Call Me. In 2001, an email was sent out to all staff, crediting and expressing much gratitude to Makate. It read ‘Kenneth Makate from our Finance Department came up with the idea a few months ago and brought it to the Product Development Division. We wish to thank Kenneth for bringing this to our attention’. This would be repeated in internal magazine sent to all staff. Yet, in his 2008 autobiography, our good friend Alan goes into great detail about how he came up with the idea (and then later denies words we could all read). He describes leaning over the balcony at work and seeing two security guards ‘buzz’ each other as how the idea came to him. He then waffles on about how another exec had mentioned a remotely similar idea, but that no mention had been made of it coming from an employee, and that he went with it and pitched it as ‘the idea from the balcony’. This cannot possibly be true. In 2008, when his book came out, he certainly would have known for 7 years that it was Makate’s idea. So either he or the exec, the head of Product Development at the time, tried to steal the idea (The court said both). In 2016, the Constitutional Court said that his version was so improbable that it could not plausibly be true, because it could not coexist with the email sent to staff crediting Makate. The court went on to describe it as a false narrative, a ‘dishonesty perpetuated in the autobiography’. Most damningly, the court said, ‘The untrue story appears to have been part of a strategy to deny the applicant compensation for the idea’. If this does not speak to the brazenness of greed and dishonesty, I don’t know what does. For years, many in the public have accused Makate of greed for fighting for what’s his. But I want you to take a step back and think about the level of greed you must have to claim someone’s idea in your autobiography. A book published and circulated across the globe — words you can never unprint. Forget the money for a bit (not for too long, because that’s why we are here), but the legacy greed of it all is nauseating. Knott-Craig was already a successful executive, and he would go on to do even more great things at another network. So why the erasure of Makate??? Most importantly, it shows the extent to which our good friend Alan and his boets were willing to go to not pay Makate — creating an entirely fictional story. This is why I am so happy Makate is finally getting his payday. 2001 was 24 years ago. It takes a lot of grit to fight for that long. The fight was not only about the money, but about taking back his legacy — a legacy that someone tried to steal in a book that is still available in retail stores today (under non-fiction, at that). And most importantly, the fight is one of resilience. I can guarantee you that the hope and strategy was that he would eventually get tired and let go of the fight after a few years. It’s not every day that you find someone who stands resolute and says that you will not litigate me into giving up!
