It doesn’t make much sense from a business standpoint. Target’s job is to sell clothes, and blocking off multiple fitting rooms, especially two and a half months after Ramadan ended, directly gets in the way of customers trying stuff on. That’s lost sales and annoyed shoppers. Legally, companies have to give reasonable religious accommodations to employees, like prayer breaks or a quiet space. But there’s no requirement to turn customer-facing areas like changing rooms into prayer spots when they already have break rooms or could set up a simple mat in a back area. Other Minnesota Targets have done dedicated employee prayer rooms before, so using the fitting rooms looks like poor judgment by that store’s management. Retail chains have not historically set up prayer spaces for Christians, even though they’re the vast majority. This feels like selective sensitivity, part of a broader pattern in Minnesota of going out of the way for the Somali Muslim community in ways they don’t for the majority population. It’s less about genuine need and more about corporate culture wanting to appear woke to certain groups. Target’s already taken PR hits for similar stuff in the past, you’d think they’d avoid stepping in it again.
