Everybody answers calls as they come in. You never know if it’s a current customer or a lead. Your job is to answer the phone and that’s why you are paid $20 an hour. If it’s a sale, you get a commission. They all have other responsibilities like AR, scheduling, and tasks I give them daily or weekly that keep the business running. What part are you struggling to grasp?
All of our office staff make a good hourly wage for the area ($20+). On top of that, they get a commission on all sales. We used to do 5% on recurring sales only. That led to office staff only pitching recurring deals and killing the sale if the customer wouldn’t sign up. We switched to 3% commission on all sales and it has properly aligned incentives. Most of our staff is making $700+ every month on commissions which equates to ~$4 an hour.

Pest Control Magazine dropped their top 100 list for this year. A lot of exciting acquisitions have happened this year shaping up the top 100. In 2002 the lowest company in the list did $2.6 million in revenue. This year you had to do $9.5 million to make the list.
@EricBeckstrand I agree. We’re obviously much smaller and I am not as well connected in the industry and even I can name 7 companies doing just under $100 million in revenue that don’t report. My question is why don’t you report? Does it harm you in any way?

@multifam_mike Well, since I had been selling the service for two years, I picked up the equipment and performed the service that I had been explaining to people.
The morning of our 3rd acquisition my business partner and I both mentioned to each that we felt extremely uneasy. We had already acquired two other companies. Our first was much scarier, larger, and came with an SBA personal guarantee. Even on that one we felt good. We signed the deal anyway and it has been our worst deal by far. Luckily nothing that will truly derail our company but I wish we had just trusted our gut.
Never, Never go against your instincts... You will almost always regret it.

@Mattdoll They refund. We got a refund year one!
Last year we did our workers comp insurance and made our best estimate on how much we’d do in payroll. Then we grew super fast and acquired 3 companies and went way over that estimate. We got our audit this spring and paid the difference. My question is this: Is it a sound business practice or insurance fraud to understate payroll estimates and just pay at the end of the year. What we did was not intentional at all but the insurance company basically insured us all year and let us pay at the end.
